Esposizione Universale Roma. A new city from fascism to the 1960s

A documentary exhibition on the design and implementation of the EUR district.
The exhibition, curated by Vittorio Vidotto, opens to the public from March 12 to June 14, 2015, aims to trace the history of the EUR district through some basic steps that have marked its formation and transformation; from the E42 project which wasinterrupted, a great Universal Exhibition for the twentieth anniversary of fascism, to the birth - in the 1950s - of the most modern residential and business area of Rome. Through a rich documentary, photographic, and filmic selection of the works by artists and architects involved in the E42 project, the public is invited to discover the enthusiasm and the contradictions (see for example the references to the myth of Rome and modernist impulses) of the construction site of that great Universal exposition that never saw the light and yet - already in its intentions - it traced the lines of a future urban expansion. As the works were interrupted because of the war, the EUR fell into a state of disrepair: this exhibition attempts to restore a better image.
The three exhibition sections:
- The first part of the exhibition will address the conditions in the E42 project ;
- The second part focuses on the post-war period during which the fate of the new district remained uncertain;
- The third part has for object rebirth and transformation of thr Eur district
In 1948 the fascinating history of the EUR also inspired Luigi Squarzina in the writing of the play L’esposizione universale, an unpublished text in Italy which will be presented in June by the Teatro di Roma and directed by Piero Maccarinelli. In collaboration with the Teatro di Roma are also the six meetings of multidisciplinary study on the history of the EUR between the 1940s and 1960s, to be held from March 19 to May 21 at the Teatro Argentina and the Auditorium of the Ara Pacis.
